Moscow will provide veterans of the Great Patriotic War from Sevastopol with a one-time payment for Victory Day in 2014. “Today we must make a decision to allocate one-time social assistance for Sevastopol veterans in the amount of five thousand rubles,” said the mayor of the city, Sergei Sobyanin, at a meeting of the capital’s government on March 11, RIA Novosti reports .

In addition to cash payments to veterans, Moscow will also send 30 buses and trolleybuses, 15 units of municipal equipment, 30 sets of computer classes and 20 tons of medicine to Sevastopol. Sobyanin also said that he agreed with the mayor of Sevastopol Alexei Chaly to conclude a new agreement between the two cities.

Sobyanin did not specify which categories of veterans the one-time payments would be intended for. As of September 2013, in Sevastopol there were more than 18 thousand war veterans, almost 34 thousand labor veterans, more than 39 thousand “children of war”, more than seven thousand veterans of military service and internal affairs bodies. The city is also home to almost 67 thousand old-age pensioners and about 11 thousand disabled people.

In 2011, Sergei Sobyanin, by his decision, increased annual payments to Sevastopol disabled people and participants of the Great Patriotic War from one to two thousand rubles. Then the total amount sent to the Russian Black Sea Fleet amounted to 5.6 million rubles - based on this figure, we can conclude that 2,800 veterans received payments.

Earlier it became known about a possible twofold increase in the budget of Crimea in the event of its annexation to Russia. Chairman of the Supreme Council of the Republic of Crimea Vladimir Konstantinov said that in this case, social payments in the autonomous republic will quadruple. The head of the budget committee of the Federation Council, Sergei Ryabukhin, in turn, stated that Russian regions could collect about 3-4 billion rubles in support of Crimea.

On March 16, a referendum on joining Russia will be held in Crimea and Sevastopol. Kyiv declared the plebiscite illegal and accused the Russian authorities of intervention in Crimea.
