Rogozin promised to build underwater industrial cities in the Arctic

On Friday, the website of the Russian Newspaper appeared an article by Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, from which it follows that Russia plans to pay close attention to the development of the Arctic and the development of mineral extraction technologies.

In the article, under the heading “look into the abyss”, Deputy Prime Minister talks about the prospects for expanding the Russian presence in the Arctic and further development of the shelf. Remembering the "nervous reaction of the West" to install the Russian flag at the bottom of the Arctic Ocean in 2007, Rogozin notes that the time has come for a real technological breakthrough.

Existing technologies for oil and gas production on the sea shelf are not applicable in the conditions of the Arctic, therefore, the country needs a fundamentally different approach to get to the explored hydrocarbon reserves. According to Rogozin, it will consist in creating the underwater (more precisely, uniform) resource production. The method will be the construction of underwater complexes of the full production cycle capable of working in autonomous mode. They will include means of drilling, production and preparation of products, as well as underwater intelligence vessels and transport vessels. It is also provided for the creation of conditions for energy supply, repair and integrated safety.

“It sounds somewhat fantastic, but this vision of the prospects for the development of the Arctic is based on a sober assessment of our capabilities, existing technological tunes and advanced solutions,” the Deputy Prime Minister wrote.

Dmitry Rogozin also refers to the need to force research in this direction, since many world companies are working on the creation of underwater energy production technologies. In his opinion, the colossal costs that will be required to implement such a large -scale project will be more than paying off not only at the expense of hydrocarbons obtained, but also due to the powerful development of Russian science, which can make a genuine breakthrough.

The environmental safety of these complexes will comply with world standards, the official is sure. According to him, it is also envisaged to create protection systems from unauthorized impact from other states.

Many have expressed doubt that the allocated funds, the volume of which is incomparable with the Sochi Olympiad, would be spent for their intended purpose.
