ITAR-TASS will be renamed to TASS

At a meeting of the Organizing Committee for the preparation for the celebration of the 110th anniversary of ITAR-TASS, the agency’s initiative was supported to return to the former name-TASS.

The historical predecessor of TASS was the St. Petersburg Telegraph Agency (St. Petersburg), which began to operate in September 1904. This was the first official information agency of Russia, as stated in its charter, which assumes its “purpose to report within the empire and abroad political, financial, economic, trade and other information that has public interest”.

In 1925, the telegraph agency of the Soviet Union (TASS) was established, which "enjoyed the exclusive right to collect and disseminate information outside the borders of the USSR, as well as the right to disseminate foreign and common -law information within the USSR and led the work of republican news agencies."

After the events of 1991, an information telegraph agency of Russia (ITAR-TASS) was established.

The final decision on the return of the TASS name to the Chief State Information will be made after the consideration of this issue by the Government of the Russian Federation, which is the founder of the agency.
