On the eve of the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution confirming the territorial integrity of Ukraine, the UN news center reports. 100 members of the General Assembly voted for the adoption of the resolution. In addition to Russia, 10 countries opposed: Armenia, Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, DPRK, Nicaragua, Sudan, Syria, Venezuela and Zimbabwe. Another 58 delegations, including China, abstained.
The Permanent Representative of Russia at the UN Vitaly Churkin stated the success: "The result is quite a good, moral and political victory for us. We have already, of course, there can be no talk of any talk of the isolation of Russia in this situation."
"A referendum held in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol on March 16, 2014, without legal force, cannot be the basis for any change in the status of an autonomous Republic of Crimea or the city of Sevastopol," the document says. The resolution calls for countries not to recognize any change in the status of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea and Sevastopol and refrain from any actions that could be interpreted as a recognition of a change in status.
Members of the General Assembly confirmed their commitment to sovereignty, political independence, unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its international boundaries. They called on all states to “refuse and refrain from actions aimed at partial or complete violation of national unity and territorial integrity of Ukraine, including any attempts to change the boundaries of Ukraine through a threat of force or its use or other illegal means.”
The General Assembly urges the parties to immediately begin the peaceful settlement of the situation in relation to Ukraine through direct political dialogue, show restraint, not resort to unilateral actions and warlike rhetoric, which can increase tension, and fully participate in international intermediary efforts.
The draft resolution was prepared by delegations of Germany, Canada, Costa Rica, Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine. Another 51 country supported the project as sponsors.
On March 16, Russia blocked the adoption of the UN Security Council of a resolution on the illegality of the Crimean referendum. The US -proposed document was supported by 13 out of 15 members of the UN Security Council, China abstained.
