Everyone will die, and I will stay

In just a week, Westeros will return to the screens. The new season of “Game of Thrones” has already acquired spoilers from two sources at once: from those who read the books of Martin and from those seven thousands who watched the beginning of the new season during the closed premiere in New York. The spoilers have already begun to use for disciplinary purposes - the other day, one French mathematics teacher wrote them on the board as a punishment to his naughty students. It is ridiculous to say - even Pedro Pascal, the performer of the role of Prince Oberin Martell, complained about spoilers. He found them right in the script. The Chilean actor calls himself a real fan of the series, had long dreamed of starring in it, but when he first read the script during the samples, he was very upset .

Pascal did not read books, like most of his colleagues on the set. Including even Peter Dinklage , whose hero, Tyrion Lannister, in principle loves reading. All the novels of Martin, it seems, was overcome by one Aidan Gillen (in the series - Lord Petir Beilish, nicknamed the Pitty).

Taiwin and Cersei Lannister performed by Charles Dance and Lena Hedi, perhaps, are much more interesting than the heroes described by Martin.

The writer himself takes a lively part in the creation of the series - and it seems to be touched by the unwillingness of the actors to digest the thick volumes of “Songs of Ice and Flame”. Talking about a conversation with several actors who had not yet suspected the imminent death of his characters, Martin not without good -natured gloating remarked that they would have to read his books in advance. About the same way, he commented on the reaction of stunned spectators to the scene of the massacre during the “red wedding”.

This is not to say that the reluctance to read a multi -volume epic does not affect the acting game. Taiwin and Cersei Lannister performed by Charles Dance and Lena Hedi, perhaps, are much more interesting than the heroes described by Martin. Lena Hedi claims that he consciously did not read the books to create a fundamentally new image, and is now afraid for the life of Cersei . The actor who does not yet know that his character will soon go to the forefathers, plays more lively and more natural. But in general, every hero of the “Game of Thrones” can die at any moment - in this sense, the series that made the slogan the Valirian phrase “Valar Morgulis” (“All people are mortal” or “All people must die”), is quite consistent with the books of Martin.

The fact that all people are mortal is pretty bothering the producers and screenwriters of the series. The author of the “Song of Ice and Flame” is already 65 years old, he has been writing books for years, bringing the fan community to fury with his leisurely - he has to endlessly wait for the next volume. Of course, Martin told the scriptwriters David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, how it all ends (for all spoilers a spoiler). But the difference between the completed book and the draft script is quite large, whether, if necessary, to make out of it a full season of the series, if necessary, is a separate issue. It is hoped that Martin will nevertheless complete his OPUS Magnum and add the two remaining novels, without dividing them into several more parts. This hope is not without reason - recently the writer posted an excerpt from a new book to the network (I won’t give a link, fans of spoilers will find it themselves).

The gap between books and film adaptation every year is more and more noticeable. In the first season, there could only be seen on the screen with novels on the novels by Martin's devoted fan - the series was fully consistent with the spirit of the original source. Only when re -reading the book, you notice that the first scene (meeting with others in the snowy forest) is pretty different from the book version. Small shifts, differences in details, the disappearance of some secondary characters and the emergence of new “ice and flame songs” that never existed on the pages, in general, do not spoil anything. But there are more serious liberties - from the change in the name of the sister of Theon to the turn of the wife of Robb Stark into the overseas girl, which dies with her husband during a “red wedding”.

The scriptwriters will have to take each of the books and combine them.

An important and still unexplored plot line is associated with a terrible clan of Bolton, one of the oldest in Westeros: according to legend, their ancestors pulled the skin from their enemies and wore it as raincoats. In Martin’s novels, Bolton gradually become an important active force and concentrates much more evil in themselves than in the series. In the second season of the series, the viewer, who did not read books, could not understand at all who was ultimately given to theon Grajoy of his warriors and who burned Winterfell. It seemed that it was done by the “iron people” themselves from the islands, who betrayed Theon. The only clue was the abandoned in a few episodes before that the promise of Bolton Sr. to send his bastard Ramzi to the walls of Winterfell with a detachment.

In the book, Bastard, caught by Sir Rodrick Kassel during a crime, poses himself as his own servant Stony and is a captive in the castle of Starkov. There, he serves the newly -minted ruler of Winterfell, Theon Grajoy, pushing him to a detubacy and promising to lead the help from Dredfort. The raiders from the iron islands did not betray Theon, and Rodrik Kassel did not die from his hand. The story ended with a scene that was not inferior to the picture of the siege of the royal harbor or the famous red wedding. The northerners, led by Rodrick Kassel, besiege Theon in Winterfell, he seriously considers to consult Meister’s advice and go into the night patrol, redeeming his betrayal. Suddenly people appear from Dredfort, attack the allies-sversal from the rear and cut them out. The rejoicing was the one, that he was discovering that his “saviors” was headed by a former stink, who turned out to be Bastard Bolton and does not intend to consider Theon an ally anymore. The last that Theon sees was the death of his associates and agony of his beloved stallion, locked in a flaming stable.

It is unlikely that the creators of the series removed this scene due to her cruelty-in the end, they did not shy to show the murder of a pregnant woman during a red wedding-although there was no such scene in the book. There are other obvious reasons: the unwillingness to introduce a new character (Bastard Ramsi in the second season) and the lack of funds for recreating another scene of mass massacre. Be that as it may, due to the distortion of the original plot in the third season, the conversation of Bolton Sr. and Freem appeared, where again the capture of Winterfell Bastard, as well as a rather stretched scene of the false salvation of Theon from Dredfort, is called to explain how Ramsi knows about the plans of the young Graijoy. By the way, in the book, Bolton is not just participating in the organization of a red wedding, but threatens Walder Frey and manipulates them, as Ramsi keeps Freus’s grandchildren hostage.

The change of roles played by Martin in the book: at first, Ramza poses herself as his servant and in this capacity serves the Theon, and then, having broken the will of Theon, gives him the name of the late servant. Behind the scenes in the series, there are so far the specific hunting habits of Bastard, and the story of his marriage, and relations with the late legal brother. Apparently, Benioff and Weiss are afraid that their creation inadvertently will turn into Hannibal . However, judging by the trailers, in the new season, more attention will be paid to the boltons - Ramsi performed by Ivan Reon there repeatedly appears.

The third season ended with a rather sluggish series that cooled the ardor of the audience after the massacre in Frey's castle. The fourth promises at least two or three turning points comparable to the red wedding, the destruction of slave traders or the battle of Chernovodnaya. The scenery and costumes are good, as usual. There is news - pleasant and not very. The creators of the series brutally treated the captain of the mercenaries of Daario Naharis - he is now played by a not too expressive actor, devoid of the impudent charisma of the previous Daario. As well as the brightest signs of this character in the books of Martin - a beard painted in blue. In the series, vegetation on his face is ordinary and unintelligible. It feels like a fairy tale about a blue beard in childhood caused an irreversible injury to the fragile consciousness of dressers and costume artists (by the way, Dwater Dwater was also left without a blue beard in Peter Jackson’s films - contrary to the text of the “hobbit” Tolkien). Jaime Lannister is now briefly cut and flaunts with a gold prosthesis. Among the beginners is the duo of Pedro Pascal and the Indira Varma Indira starred in the series HBO . Mark Gatiss, playing quietly Nestoris, the representative of the Iron Bank of Bravos, reminds Microft Holmes under the cover. And finally, we have to see the Russian guest - Yuri Kolokolnikov in the role of washing, the harsh magnarium (leader) of the Tribute Tribal.

If the fourth season is saturated with events and receives its own climax and denouement, then in the fifth climax it may not happen. The fact is that the events of the books “Feast of Vulture” and “Dance with Dragons” occur simultaneously in different parts of the world invented by Martin. The scriptwriters will have to take each of the books and combine them. Therefore, there is a risk that the fifth season will end with nothing - at a glance. In any case, Benioff and Weiss have another year to cope with this task and adapt the last books of Martin for the film adaptation. In the meantime, the world is waiting for the beginning of the fourth season. Everything is mixed in the Lannisters' house, the wall will turn into the front line, and Daenerys will finally go to some throne and will apply good, cause justice, reap the fruits of his political idealism and experience the transitional age of their winged sons.
