Declared short list of Nora Gal

Today, April 7, the founders of the Nora Gal prize have announced a short list of works, one of which will be recognized as the best translation of the story from English into Russian.

The Nora Gal Award was established in 2012 in memory of the outstanding Russian translator Nora Gal (1912-1991). The founders of the award are its heirs: a literary critic and editor Edward Kuzmin, a literary figure and translator Dmitry Kuzmin.

In the third premium season , 34 transfers were put forward for the award, among applicants for the award were four participants in the short lists of past years. As a result, seven translations were included in the short list of Nora Gal awards:

• Elena Kislenkova - Stephen Vincent Bene. "On the rivers of the Babylonian";
• Maria Falikman - Archie Black. "Uncle smoke";
• Mikhail Nazarenko - John Krauli. "Missolgolgi, 1824"
• Jan Shapiro - Richmal Crompton. "William among the servants";
• Elena Kalyavina - Alice Manro “Dance of Blessed Shadows”;
• Shashi Martynova - Michael Martown. "A bucket of warm saliva";
• Ksenia Bogdanova - Katherine Mansfield. "Miss Brill."

Prize applicants are residents of St. Petersburg, Kyiv, Moscow and Sevastopol, both famous specialists and debutants. Translations of Mikhail Nazarenko and Shashi Martynova were published in 2013, the remaining five stories have not yet been published and put forward for the prize to translators.

According to the rules of the Nora Gal Award, the translated works belong to the literature of the XX - XXI centuries: from the classic story of the Mansfield, published in 1920, to the short story of last year's Nobel laureate Alice Manro .

Nora Gal Prize winner will be announced on April 22 at an evening at the Moscow Library of Turgenev.
