
He began his diplomatic career in 1984. And the first serious test for the young diplomat was a business trip from 1986 to 1989. At the embassy in Warsaw, where he, in particular, was responsible for contacts with the Polish opposition. Similar corresponded to his character: in his student years, Rydiger, along with his brother Burkhard, organized an illegal escape from the GDR to his close relative and his friends. The future diplomat had to make ... fake passports.
This story formed the basis of the book “Case with Tom: Escape from Germany to Germany”, written by von Frich in 2009. The book was well met by readers, it was noted by the ex-minister of foreign affairs, Hans-Ditrich Gensher: “A courageous act and an impressive book, which is highly reliable and vividly gives an idea of the bitter reality of the separation of the German nation.”
Over the years of the diplomatic service, Ambassador von Frich passed many steps of the career ladder: he worked in the German representative office at the European Union in Brussels, led the German political planning headquarters, was the vice president of the federal intelligence service, and participated in the preparation and holding of meetings of a large eight. From July 2010 to March 2014, he represented the interests of Germany in Poland.
The appointment to Russia was in a difficult situation. Literally from the train, he had to take a note of protest of the Russian Foreign Ministry in connection with the statements of the German Finance Minister Wolfgang Shoible, who compared the annexation of Crimea with the annexation of the Sudeten region in 1938.
In short, work in Moscow will not be easy. But Ambassador von Frich has a solid experience of diplomatic work and is considered an authoritative specialist in issues of eastern policy. And Russia is not a stranger for him - the ancestors came from the Baltic Germans. Before the revolution, the great-grandfather was a deputy of the Duma and a member of the State Council, the houses often spoke Russian, the music of Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky sounded, in his school years the Rüdiger was fond of the verses of Anna Akhmatova, read the works of Solzhenitsyn.
