Tehran regained access to $450 million

Washington has unblocked some of Iran's foreign assets that had previously been frozen. This was announced by the US State Department after the publication of a report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The document states that Iran has halved its reserves of uranium enriched to 20%.

The IAEA's monthly report on Tehran's compliance with its obligations under the Geneva agreements with international mediators (the five permanent members of the UN Security Council plus Germany) dated November 2013 was published on Thursday. So far, according to the organization, Iran is fully complying with their conditions - the destruction of uranium enriched to 20%, non-enrichment of uranium by more than 5%, as well as providing IAEA experts with regular access to nuclear facilities.

After the report was published, State Department spokeswoman Mary Harf announced that the US Treasury Department had taken the steps necessary to unlock Tehran's assets worth $450 million. Fulfilling all requirements under the Geneva agreements would allow Tehran to regain access to $4.2 billion. In early February, Washington unblocked $550 million in Tehran’s foreign accounts.
