The European Parliament appealed to the EU executive bodies with a demand to expand individual sanctions against Russian officials and speed up the preparation of a list of restrictive measures in relation to certain sectors of the Russian economy. This call is contained in the resolution adopted yesterday.

The document, in particular, speaks of the need to prepare “measures against Russian companies and their subsidiaries, especially in the energy sector, as well as in relation to Russian investments and assets in the EU, as well as to review all agreements with Russia with a view to their possible suspension.” In addition, parliamentarians consider it necessary to “accelerate the application of the embargo on the supply (to Russia —Kommersant ) of dual-use weapons and technologies.” The resolution also speaks of “the urgent need for a strong joint energy security policy in order to reduce the EU’s dependence on Russian oil and gas, including through diversification of energy supply sources, full implementation of the Third Energy Package and the possibility of suspending, if necessary, gas imports (from the Russian Federation. — " Kommersant" )". In this regard, the European Parliament calls for abandoning the construction of the South Stream gas pipeline.

The resolution emphasizes that Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia and other countries of the Eastern Partnership project have a European perspective and can apply for EU membership “provided that they adhere to the principles of democracy, respect for fundamental freedoms and human rights, minority rights and ensure the rule of law." At the same time, MEPs are convinced that Russia will only benefit from the rapprochement of its neighbors with the European Union. “Each country has every right to make its own political choice, and the EU’s relations with its eastern partners are aimed at promoting prosperity and strengthening political stability, from which the Russian Federation will also benefit,” the document says.
