At the post of new US ambassador in Russia, the White House is preparing to offer John Tefft. It is reported by "Kommersant" with reference to sources in the State Department. Previously, The New York Times published the same information.

Tefft was born in 1949. In 1989-1992, he worked as the deputy director of the Department of the State Department for the USSR Affairs (later on the affairs of Russia and the CIS). In 1996-1999 he was deputy head of the American Embassy in Moscow; Until September 1997 he served as a temporary attorney in Russia. Tefft is considered a rather tough and not prone to compromises a negotiator. He regularly criticized Russian politics.

Until the end of February, the most likely candidate for the post of ambassador was called Rose Gottemeller, who adheres to a pro -Russian position. However, after consultations that lasted the whole of March, in Washington they came to the conclusion that Tefft would be the best candidate.

According to the interlocutors of Kommersant, the upcoming appointment of Tefft indicates that the United States intends to firmly follow the course of Russia's isolation. "There will be no new reboot, and in the remaining two and a half years the administration of President Obama will try to minimize cooperation with Moscow," one of the sources of the publication said. According to him, the choice of Tefft will be a "unambiguous signal to the Kremlin."

It is claimed that Washington’s strategy has already been developed against Moscow. It consists in the further isolation of Russia and the prevention of the Kremlin’s military intervention in eastern Ukraine. "A confident and constant increase in pressure on Russia is unlikely to solve the problem of Crimea and, perhaps, will not solve the problem in the east of Ukraine. But this will solve all the problems with Russia," the former US Ambassador to NATO Daalder told The New York Times.

He is known as one of the key figures in the process of "rebooting" relations between the two countries, which was taken by the administration of the President of Barack Obama. The review of Macfol from Moscow was explained by a change in the policy of the United States in relation to Russia.
