In 1949, her first personal exhibition was held in Klagenfurt, in the early 1950s in Paris, Lassnig met the French surrealists, in Vienna studied in the class of the founder of the Viennese fantastic realism of Albert Güterlo.

Together with the artist Arnulf Rainer, Maria Lassnig laid the foundations of the Informel direction in Austrian art.

In the 1960s she worked in Paris, in 1968 she opened a workshop in New York. There, she finished the animation drawing courses in the Manhattan school of fine arts, began to make films on a 16-mm camera. The collection of animation and cinematographic works of the artist was subsequently shown on her large retrospective in the Vienna Museum of Albertin.

The works of Maria Lassnig were shown at Documenta contemporary art exhibitions in Kassel in 1982 and 1997, her personal exhibitions were held at the largest museums in New York, Paris, Zurich, Rome, Vienna, Duceldorf, Munich, Frankfurt, Gaga, Nuremberg, Lucerne.

In 2013, Lassnig was awarded the “golden lion” of the 55th Venetian Biennale for contribution to art. “For more than sixty years, she created her personal encyclopedia of self -replacement and used painting as an instrument of introspection,” the Biennale’s official release quotes “Arthid” . “In his 93 years, Lassnig is a unique example of stubbornness and independence.”
