The independence of the Lugansk People's Republic supported 96 percent of the voting

The independence of the self -proclaimed Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR) supported 96.2% of voting in the regional referendum on May 11. This was reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the statement of the chairman of the Central Election Commission of the LPR Alexander Malykhin.

CEC refers to data 32 of territorial election commissions in the entire region. The turnout in Lugansk was reported, amounted to 81% of voters, but the organizers did not name the total number of voters.

On May 11, referendums were held in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, which were proposed to answer “yes” or “no” to the question about the independence of the regions. The Ukrainian authorities in Kyiv refused to recognize the legitimacy of referenda and their results. A number of media and observers noted that anyone who came to the polling station could vote in a referendum: there were no voters, it was not necessary to provide passport data. In particular, the correspondent of Echo of Moscow Ilya Azar wrote on Twitter that he was given the opportunity to vote, although he is a Russian citizen, but he refused.

President Vladimir Putin on May 12 stated that Russia "respect" refers to the will of residents, but did not officially declare the results. Earlier, Putin publicly turned to the residents of Donetsk and Lugansk with a proposal to transfer referendums to a later date.

Also on Monday, RIA Novosti reported that the Lugansk People’s Republic intends to apply to the UN with a request for international recognition. This was reported to the agency on May 12 by the press secretary of the "Army of the Southeast" Vasily Nikitin.
