Turchinov called referendums about independence "propaganda cover of murders"

The acting President of Ukraine Alexander Turchinov said that the referendums about independence in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions will not have any legal consequences. Turchinov’s appeal is given on the website of the Verkhovna Rada.

“The farce that terrorists with separatists call a referendum is nothing more than a propaganda cover of murders, abductions of people, violence And other serious crimes, ”Turchinov added.

He explained that the only legal consequence of the plebiscites carried out will be criminal liability for their organizers. The goal of the processes taking place in the east of the country, according to Turchinov, is to “complete destabilizing the situation in Ukraine, disrupting the presidential elections and the overthrow of Ukrainian authorities.”

At the same time, the president expressed his readiness to conduct a dialogue with those representatives of the eastern regions that "do not have blood in their hands."

Earlier, representatives of Western countries said the non -recognition of referenda. The press secretary of the EU representative for Foreign Affairs Katherine Azhton Maya Kosyankchich told Reuters that the organizers of the plebiscites do not have democratic legitimacy. The official representative of the US State Department Jen Psaki called votes illegal, and added that they would lead to further fragmentation and riots in Ukraine.

On May 11, referendums on the independence of self -proclaimed people's republics were held in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions. In the Donetsk People’s Republic, more than 89% of about 75% voted in a turnout spoke in support of independence. In the Luhansk region, according to preliminary data, the number of supporters of independence was 94–98%.
