Archaeologists say that at the bottom of the Caribbean north of Haiti, the fragments of the Santa Maria ship were discovered, at which Christopher Columbus discovered America.
“All geographical and archaeological data, as well as the characteristics of the sea bottom relief with certainty indicate that these are the wreckage of the famous flagship of Columbus, Santa Maria,” said the Independent head of the Barry Clifford expedition, one of the most famous underwater archaeologists in the United States.
Clifford made an assumption about the possible location of Santa Maria on the basis of research results conducted by other archaeologists in 2003-they then managed to find Fort Columbus on Haiti.
Having studied the diaries of the sailor in detail, Clifford, went in search of the ship. Over seven years using marine magnetometers and sucks of lateral review, archaeologists examined more than 400 anomalies on the ocean day. In the end, the search area narrowed to a small site, on which the find was made.
According to Clifford, the participants in his expedition have not yet touched the alleged fragments of Santa Maria, only took pictures and took measurements. The next step will be the excavations itself.
The three-masted Santa Maria Karakka about 25 m long was launched in the water in 1460 in Galicia. In October 1492, Christopher Columbus aboard Santa Maria reached one of the Bahamas.
The ship crashed on December 25, 1492 off the coast of Haiti, its fragments were used in the construction of a settlement founded in this place in January 1493.
