Olympiad in Sochi at all costs

On July 4, 2007, members of the International Olympic Committee as a result of competitive selection were declared the venue for the XXII Olympic Winter Games and XI Paralympic Winter Games the Southern Russian City of Sochi. Then they did not all understand that the construction of Olympic facilities would be turned into violations of the rights of labor migrants, causing harm to the environment, as well as uncertainty in matters of the resettlement of local residents.

From 2012 to 2014, in Sochi, employees of the reception network “Migration and Law” of the Human Rights Center “Memorial” accepted applications for violations of the rights of labor migrants. These statements and work on them formed the basis of the report “Olympics in Sochi at all costs”. The violations described in the report are also confirmed by photographs and videos, reports of journalists and other documents.

As a result of the lack of organized employment and control over compliance with the legislation, many labor migrants were left without the necessary documents, lived in unsanitary conditions, did not receive salaries, and threats received threats. When the work came to the end, the campaign of pursuit of migrants began, during which many of them were expelled without salary or, as a result of pressure, decided to leave on their own.

Is it possible that when organizing the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games, it was more important to hand over objects on time than to observe obligations to workers? Participants in the press conference will answer this question.
