Montenegro joined the sanctions of the European Union against Russia. According to RIA Novosti, this was stated by President of the country Filip Vuyanovich. He explained such a decision by the need for Montenegro as an EU candidate and NATO to share the foreign policy of both associations. “If we didn’t do this, if we were indifferent to these decisions, then it is undoubted that our path to the EU would slow down and the possibility of invitation to NATO in Wales would be excluded,” the Chernogorsky president said.
At the same time, Vuyanovich emphasized that the decision made cannot be considered directed against Russia. "Russia must understand that Montenegro, following its interests, wants to be part of the EU and part of NATO, in no way expressing the anti -Russian mood," he remarked.
In early September, the next NATO summit will be held in South Wales. As expected, Montenegro will be invited to join the North Atlantic Alliance.
The sanctions list of the European Union includes 61 people . On May 12, it included the first deputy head of the presidential administration Vyacheslav Volodin, the Commander of the Airborne Forces Vladimir Shamanov, the head of the Duma committee on constitutional law and state building Vladimir Pligin, as well as a number of officials of the occupied Crimea and terrorists in eastern Ukraine.
At the same time, the leaders of Gazprom were not among the new defendants in the list. Maya Kosianchich, spokeswoman for the head of European diplomacy Katherine Ashton, on May 14 stated that at the current stage it was not supposed to extend sanctions to them .
Meanwhile, the next day, Vedomosti wrote that the seizure of the Chairman of the Board of Gazprom Alexei Miller from the draft version of the sanctions list was lobbied by European partners of the state corporations , in particular from Germany, France and Italy. As reported, businessmen were afraid that sanctions against Miller would significantly complicate cooperation with Gazprom.
