In 1985-1989, he headed the State Council of the Polish People's Republic (PNR). In 1989 he was elected president of the republic. In 1990, he left politics, transferring power to the elected President Lech Valens.
In December 1981, Yaruzelsky declared martial law in the country. Then the Polish intelligence agencies arrested about 3 thousand oppositionists, including almost all members of the leadership of the Solidarity trade union, as well as its leader and founder Lech Valens. Speaking to the Sejm commission in 1992, Yaruzelsky took responsibility for this step.
The President General suppressed a democratic movement in Poland, and five years later the first of the Eastern European leaders led the country along the reform path.
