The main temple of the largest Buddhist Agin monastery in Russia in Transbaikalia was almost completely burned down on May 27. The fire, the cause of which, according to the preliminary version, was a careless handling of fire, happened at about 21:00 local time (at about 15:00 in Moscow). The fire began on the second floor of the temple, and the fire quickly spread to wooden floors, covering the upper floor and roof.
Buddhist monks-lamas, together with parishioners, saved books, altar and relics, and also rescued the statue of Buddha from the fire, ITAR-TASS reports with reference to the press secretary of Datsan, Dabu Dabaeva. At least 25 employees of the Ministry of Emergencies and nine units of equipment took part in the extinguishing of the fire, but only the walls remained from the temple, Dabaev said.
The amount of damage caused to experts has yet to be evaluated, but the authorities have already promised that they would find funds for the restoration of the temple. “The financial capabilities of the regional budget, unfortunately, are limited, but we will turn to entrepreneurs for help. The temple will restore the whole world,” said the governor of the Trans -Baikal Territory Konstantin Ilkovsky.
In the next three days, special prayers will be held in all monasteries of the Buddhist traditional Sangha of Russia. Worships will be aimed at preventing new fires. And also believers will pray for the speedy restoration of parishioners and clergymen who survived the shock as a result of a fire in the temple of the Agin Dutsan.
