June 11 at 19:00 - round table "Salazar victims. Attitude to victims and executioners in democratic Portugal "
(from the cycle "Social and legal status of victims of political repression in modern Europe"))
The mechanisms of justice of the transition period can be divided into two main types: those that are initially focused on criminals, and oriented primarily to the victims.
The first type includes criminal and non -university prosecution in order to punish or, on the contrary, to relieve the punishment of those who committed crimes or collaborated with a dictatorial regime (courts, clarification of the circumstances of involvement in the crimes of the past, forced deportation or, conversely, amnesty).
The second mechanism implies, in particular, financial compensation to the victims of persecution, torture during the dictatorship, as well as certain work to preserve historical memory.
Speaker: Sociologist and political scientist Antoniu Kota Pintu (Lisbon) will tell you about these mechanisms developed in Portugal after the fall of the Salazar regime and the “Carnation of the Cloves” of 1974
