Parliament of Spain approved the renunciation of the king

The lower house of the Spanish parliament approved the law allowing the crown to transition from King Juan Carlos, who declared his intention to renounce the throne, to the Crown Prince Felipe.

The bill was supported by both deputies from the ruling people's party and opposition socialists. 299 deputies voted for - only 19, representatives of the left and separatist parties. They arranged a promotion in parliament for holding a referendum on the form of government in the country with the possibility of a transition to the republic. According to polls of public opinion, a small majority of the Spaniards advocates the preservation of the constitutional monarchy.

If the bill is approved by the upper house-the Senate, then, as expected, on June 19, the 46-year-old Prince Felipe will be sworn as King Philip VI.
