Turing test passed for the first time

On June 7, a computer program simulating a 13-year-old Ukrainian boy passed the Turing test for the first time in history, according to the website of the British University of Reading [1], where the competition was held to mark the 60th anniversary of the tragic death of the famous British mathematician and cryptographer.

The victorious program beat four rivals. It was developed by Vladimir Veselov, a native of Russia, who now lives in the USA, and his Ukrainian colleague Evgeniy Demchenko, who now lives in Russia.

33% of experts believed that they were communicating with a teenager from Odessa named Eugene Goostman, that he loves hamburgers and candy, his dad works as a gynecologist and they have a guinea pig at home.

Vladimir Veselov said that the first version of the program appeared back in 2001. The image of a 13-year-old teenager was not chosen by chance: at this age a child knows a lot, but not everything, which complicates the task of the judges.

The Turing test appeared in 1950. It aims to answer the question of whether a machine can think, and is considered passed if, after a series of five-minute dialogues, 30% of experts are mistaken in identifying the interlocutor.

Let's remember: in December last year, the British Queen posthumously pardoned Alan Turing, convicted of homosexuality.
