The head of the European Commission will be the ex-Prime Minister Luxembourg

During the EU summit in Brussels, the leaders of the European states agreed to appoint the ex-Prime Minister of Luxembourg Jean-Claude Junker to the post of head of the European Commission for 2014-2019, ITAR-TASS reports with reference to the chairman of the European Council, Herman Van Rompey.

In this post, Junker will be replaced by Jose Manuel Barrosa, who headed the EU executive body for two terms since 2004.

Jean-Claude Junker was the Prime Minister of Luxembourg from 1995 to 2013, and in 1989-2009 he was also the Minister of Finance of this country. Junker is considered one of the architects of the Maastricht Treaty, which lay down on the foundation of the European Union. In 2004, he was one of Barrozo's competitors for the post of head of the European Commission.

In July 2013, the junker resigned from the prime minister’s post due to the scandal with secret dossiers to politicians and illegal wiretapping politicians, officials and entrepreneurs, up to the head of state, the Grand Duke.
