Where do they give high interest rates on deposits?

In the current difficult situation with liquidity, the Central Bank is vigilantly monitoring that banks do not raise deposit rates. So they are faced with a difficult task: to attract deposits, to save the license, and not to be exposed to interest charges.

The Russian banking system found itself in the position of a hungover moose from the joke, who drinks from a stream, and gets worse and worse. The Central Bank, with the passion of an avid hunter, shoots down banks, and last week it revoked the licenses of two. And for eleven, he limited the rate at which they have the right to attract funds from investors. This measure is relatively new; the Central Bank received the right to use it only last fall.

Of course, such an impact can be considered humane, because the Bank of Russia allows the supervised ones to collect money from the population, it simply does not allow them to take on excessive risks. Previously, the regulator limited the volume of attracted deposits for banks, that is, keep as much as they received, but no more. Thus, it was assumed that the bank would not accept new deposits. However, after the scandals with Mosoblbank and the Moscow Lights Bank, it turned out that after the introduction of restrictions on the volume of transactions with deposits, banks began to collect them “underground”. That is, they calmly accepted new deposits, closed old ones without the knowledge of the owners and showed the figures required by the Central Bank in the reporting.

Time will tell whether the new policy of the Central Bank will be more effective. However, the fact that the banking community responded to the Bank of Russia’s close attention to compliance with its recommendations regarding deposit rates is beyond doubt. For example, the Ural Bank for Reconstruction and Development (UBRD) introduced the “Record” deposit, the rate on which is calculated as the average maximum for the top 10 banks plus 2 percentage points. What the record is here is not very clear, but the maximum respect for the Central Bank’s recommendation to limit rates at exactly this level is obvious.

Another interesting trend has emerged: having stopped declared rates dangerously close to the line beyond which they could cause the regulator’s dissatisfaction, some banks clarify that with the capitalization of interest rates, they cross this line with impunity. Some banks don’t bother themselves with complex calculations at all, but simply write “as agreed” in the column instead of percentages. In other words, “come, let’s haggle.” An ideal way to avoid claims from the Central Bank and offer good conditions to especially valuable clients. The Bank of Russia will not allow “secret shoppers” into such banks. Not his style. Most likely, he will try to ban such formulations.

However, whether the Central Bank wants it or not, deposit rates will rise. So the head of Sberbank, German Gref, first promised that interest on both loans and deposits would increase, and then he raised it. True, so far only for deposits opened online and savings certificates. But you have to start somewhere. Following Sberbank, Rosselkhozbank has already announced an increase in rates. Both are included in the top 10, according to which the average maximum rate is calculated, and it can only be exceeded by 2 percentage points.
