The Russian president today, July 9, made another scandalous statement, worthy of standing on par with his famous proposal to put women and children in front of armed soldiers who captured Ukrainian military units in Crimea. At a meeting with leaders of Jewish organizations in Russia, Vladimir Putin said that the main ideologist of German Nazism, Joseph Goebbels, was a “talented man,” ITAR-TASS reports.

“To deny what happened, you need to be not only stupid, but also arrogant,” Vladimir Putin said during a meeting with the heads of Jewish communities. - Unfortunately, this impudence today, like 70 years ago, achieves its goal. As Joseph Goebbels, who was a talented man and always got his way, said, “the more monstrous the lie, the sooner people will believe it.”

The Russian president also noted that he considers Jewish organizations Russia’s main allies in the fight against Nazism. He recalled that during the Second World War, the Jewish people fought side by side with the Soviet people, and therefore Russians, like no one else, understand the sensitivity of the Holocaust topic for Jews.

Interestingly, the Russian state news agency ITAR-TASS, a few minutes after its publication, edited the news about Putin’s statement about Goebbels, excluding from it the phrase “he was a talented man and always got his way.”

(Please note: the words “Goebels was a talented man” were removed, the meeting with rabbis was called “a conversation with representatives of international public and religious organizations”, about the extermination on July 12, 1942 in Sevastopol along with the Jews of the Krymchaks, whom the German fascists, following Russian tsarism, considered a type of Jews, it was said “Representatives of other nationalities who tried to save their neighbors." However, the video from the meeting of the Russian president with the leaders of Jewish organizations has already been broadcast on the news of the state television channels "Russia-1" and "Russia-24" and was probably recorded by one of the viewers, which practically guarantees its imminent appearance on social networks. At the same time, the video about Putin’s meeting with the leaders of Jewish communities, which had already been broadcast throughout Russia, never appeared on the VGTRK news website vesti.ru - neither in full nor in censored form.

It is worth recalling that it was VGTRK that once already became the object of a scandal associated with the name of Joseph Goebbels. So, in January 2014, his statement about Vladimir Lenin was published in VGTRK groups on social networks under the general heading “Quotes from great people.” Then the journalists who called Goebbels “great” were fired from the All-Russian State Television and Radio Company. It is not yet clear whether they will be reinstated after the talents of their ideological predecessor Joseph Goebbels were recognized by Russian President Vladimir Putin himself.

The President of the Russian Federation met with rabbis of Israel and Western Europe to discuss the long-standing diseases of society: neo-Nazism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism. But it was not about Russian society at all, but about the countries of Eastern Europe. Who gave Russia the right to judge others?

“The reviving ideas of Nazism here and there are of particular concern. I would like to thank the Jewish community and public organizations that actively and courageously, I mean some situations in the world today, continue to uncompromisingly fight any manifestations and any attempts to revive Nazi ideology,” Russian President Vladimir Putin said on July 9. These words were spoken in the Kremlin at his meeting with rabbis from Israel and Western European countries, where “joint efforts to prevent the rewriting of history, the fight against neo-Nazism and neo-fascism, xenophobia and anti-Semitism were discussed.” The topics are worthy and important. One may even get the impression that the fight against Nazism and Judeophobia is about to begin in Russia.
However, it immediately becomes clear that there was no talk about Russian anti-Semitism from the beginning. “This will be a conversation about the common concern that Jewish leaders in Europe and the Russian state have, and which is associated with the revisionism of the results of the Second World War, with the revisionism of the Holocaust, the revisionism of collaborationism and other similar topics that have become especially relevant after a number of countries in Eastern Europe have gained independence,” said representatives of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Russia, the head of whose rabbinical council, Berl Lazar, attended the meeting.
In a word, Putin’s guests, including the chief Sephardic rabbi of Israel Yitzhak Yosef and the former chief Ashkenazi rabbi Israel Meir Lau, were concerned about the processes “in Eastern Europe.” Thus recognizing that Russia has the moral right to judge others, since it itself, apparently, has nothing wrong with Nazism and anti-Semitism. None of them seem to know that Russian “patriotic” sites are filled to the brim with anti-Judeophobic content, that neo-Nazis march along the streets of Russian cities, that the word “Yid” in Russia still remains a universal insult - from everyday to political.
As for Russia’s official position, the open anti-Zionism of the Soviet era has sunk into oblivion, and Israel’s neutrality in the Russian-Ukrainian conflict forces the Russian Federation to behave more restrained, however, despite this, its close friends continue to include Iran and Syria, whose long-range missiles transferred to Hamas threaten most of Israel. Hamas representatives themselves were recently received with pleasure in Moscow. It is worth recalling the regular accusations against the Jewish state voiced by the Russian Foreign Ministry, and the “pogrom” Goebbels materials of the Russia Today TV channel, as well as other state channels.
Yes, it’s a long way to go - just this morning, RIA Novosti reported with restrained joy about a rocket attack from the Gaza Strip: “For the first time since 2012, militants managed to hit Jerusalem. Three of the four rockets fired at it fell within the city of 800,000, which the Israelis declared their capital.” That’s right, the Russian Federation doesn’t even recognize the capital of Israel.
So, in my opinion, international Jewry should stop pretending to be ostriches and start paying attention to Judeophobia in Russia before discussing with Putin what is happening in other countries. And then, perhaps, the Russian president, instead of politicizing anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, will actually be concerned about solving these problems. Unlikely, but what if?
