1904. Pablo Nerud was born

110 years ago, on July 12, 1904, the Chilean poet-communist and diplomat Pablo Nerud (Ricardo Reyes Basoalto), the Nobel laureate of 1971 "For poetry, which embodied the fate of the whole continent", was born. In 1953, he also became the laureate of the International Stalinist Prize "For Strengthening the World between the Peoples."

Neruda died of cancer in Santiago on September 23, 1973, shortly after the military coup and the death of his friend, President Salvador Allende. There was a version that the poet was killed by the supporters of General Pinochet, but the exhumation conducted in 2013 did not confirm the murder.
