1989 Clashes in Sukhumi

25 years ago, on July 15, 1989, there were clashes between Georgians and Abkhazians in Sukhumi. The reason for them was the protest of the Abkhazians against the organization of a branch of the Tbilisi State University in Sukhumi. Stones, sticks, bladed weapons and firearms were used in the collision.

During the two-day clashes, 11 people were killed and 127 were injured.

On July 7, units of the internal troops, as well as cadets of military schools (including the Ryazan Higher Command School of the Airborne Forces), armed with firearms, were brought into Sukhumi, which made it possible to stabilize the situation.
