
Marines all over the world use hovercraft to land on the coast, as they are distinguished by their high speed qualities and large carrying capacity. However, their engines and some components, operating at extremely high speeds, have a short lifespan, and the amount of fuel consumed during movement is simply off the charts. Military engineers have been trying to solve this problem for a long time, and perhaps American specialists are close to success.
Since 2008, the research division of the US Marine Corps has been working on the problem of finding a replacement for hovercraft. In 2012, the creation of the first prototype of a vehicle called the Ultra Heavy-Lift Amphibious Connector (UHAC) began, which recently went on its first test drive, writes DailyTechInfo .
The prototype UHAC transport, measuring 12.8 meters long, 8 meters wide and 5.2 meters high, is a scale copy of the future floating transport, which will be exactly twice as large. The final UHAC transport will require 230 sq. meters of space on the parking deck, it will be able to lift and carry 150 tons of cargo, and if equipped with additional lifting elements - up to 190 tons.
UHAC is capable of traveling 360 kilometers (200 nautical miles) on a single fuel fill, and due to its tracked propulsion system, it can overcome obstacles three meters high.
Large-scale sea trials of the UHAC transport began on July 9 at the Marine Corps training site on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. And if these tests are successful, then specialists from the Marine Corps Warfighting Lab and the Office of Naval Research will begin creating a full-scale prototype of the UHAC transport.
