The European Court of Human Rights on July 17 recognized the imprisonment of the accused in a metal cage during the trial as degrading. This practice is contrary to the third article of the European Convention, which prohibits torture, according to the final decision of the Grand Chamber of the ECtHR in the case of Svinarenko and Slyadnev v. Russia.
In addition, two judges of the ECtHR issued a dissenting opinion, raising the issue that the practice of replacing metal cages with glass "aquariums" could violate Article 6 of the Convention, which guarantees the right to a fair trial.
