In Washington on Tuesday evening, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Robert Menendes welcomed the new round of targeted industry sanctions against Russia.
According to Menendes, Russian President Vladimir Putin reacts only to force. And, according to the Senator, the sanctions declared the United States and the European Union demonstrated a clear unity of goals.
Menendes expressed satisfaction that the announced sanctions will also include a ban on the supply of advanced technologies of energy equipment for Arctic drilling or for shale oil projects.
According to him, the United States does not need to help the creation of the Russian shale revolution. These actions are important to increase pressure on Russia, notes the American senator.
According to him, sanctions imposed today are not necessarily a final decision for the United States. Menendes said that he was ready to move on and impose new sanctions in September, if Russia does not immediately change its course in Ukraine.
According to the senator, President Putin fundamentally miscalculated, mistakenly believing that the United States and their European partners will not be able to connect their words about sanctions with the case. In his opinion, the United States and its allies will not allow Russia to remain unpunished when President Putin is trying to turn the international order by joining Crimea and inciting riots and violence in eastern Ukraine. Menentes believes that this occurs by supporting separatist militants who killed hundreds of Ukrainians and committed a vile crime, knocking down a civilian aircraft.
Menendes said that President Putin must understand: the USA and Europe are united in his opposition to Russian aggression and this will not change.
