The European Union summit has opened in Brussels

In Brussels, the European Union summit takes place. The forum also has President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko.

It is expected that today the final decision will not be made to tighten sanctions against Russia - in response to the escalation of the conflict in eastern Ukraine. Since a number of European leaders are afraid of a new Cold War and negative consequences for the economy of their countries, the meeting participants will offer the European Commission - the highest executive body of the EU - to urgently prepare a package of new measures against Moscow. This is stated in the draft statement of the summit.

Before the forum, French President Francois Hollande urged not to waste time and impose sanctions - in an attempt to prevent a large -scale war.

British Prime Minister David Cameron announced the need to realize the unacceptability of the presence of Russian troops in Ukraine.

Lithuania President Dalya Grybauskaite urged to immediately start the provision of military assistance to Kyiv, emphasizing that, having attacked Ukraine, Moscow actually entered a state of war with Europe.

At the EU summit, they must also approve the new head of the European Commission and the Supreme Representative for foreign policy.
