Stavropol investigators have summarized the practice of extremism: they are opening criminal cases for VKontakte music and quarrels with neighbors

The Investigative Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Stavropol Territory summed up the results of the investigation into crimes of an extremist nature for eight months of 2014: five criminal cases were opened under Article 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (incitement of hatred and enmity on a national basis).

A brief report published on the official website of the department states that Stavropol investigators have begun to respond more effectively to allegations of extremism: in 2013, there were 12 such allegations, and only one criminal case was opened; in 2014, with eight allegations, five criminal cases were already opened business Among those who were subject to criminal prosecution is the musical group “O.T,” two of whose members performed “compositions of their own compositions aimed at humiliating human dignity on ethnic grounds” in a Stavropol club. They posted the same compositions on their VKontakte page. Criminal case under Art. 282 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation was initiated against a 50-year-old resident of the village of Zunkar, who cursed her neighbor: during a quarrel “over disagreements over housekeeping,” she publicly showered her with insults containing “a negative assessment of her personality based on nationality, as well as way of life, culture, traditions of her nationality.” The investigation into this case has not yet been completed. In their report, Stavropol investigators note that there is an interdepartmental group in the region to combat extremism, which includes employees of the Federal Security Service, the Federal Drug Control Service and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The fight against extremist crimes is regularly discussed at meetings and conferences and, along with the fight against terrorism, is recognized as “the most important area of activity of the investigative department.”
