Russian military aircraft flew around the Toronto Navy ship, participating in the exercises of Sea Breeze in the Black Sea, reports Lenta.ru with reference to the Globe and Mail Canadian newspaper. This was announced by the Ministry of Defense of Canada.
The incident occurred on Sunday. Two Su-24 fighter-bomber and one military transport An-26 flew around Toronto at low altitude, while one of the aircraft dropped to a height of 300 meters.
The actions of Russian pilots, as the Minister of Defense of Canada Rob Nicholson noted in the official statement, did not pose a threat to the ship, but "they were unjustified provocative and created the risk of escalation of tension."
The frigate of the Canada Navy Toronto entered the Black Sea on September 6. He participates in the joints with Ukraine of the sectors of Sea Breeze, which are held annually. In addition to Ukraine, the USA and Canada, ships of Spain, Romania and Turkey are involved in them. The official goal of the exercises is to develop an operation to ensure the safety of shipping. The Russian Foreign Ministry had previously stated that these maneuvers are injected with tension and threaten the peace process in Ukraine.
This is not the first case in recent months, when Russian planes come closer to the ships of NATO countries. So, in April, the Su-24 made several spans at a low altitude above the American destroyer Donald Cook, deployed in the Black Sea.
