Julia Strakovich is the author of the book “Digital. What happened to music in the XXI century ”, which has stated a chronicle of changes that have occurred over the past couple of decades with an industrial recording industry, the musician shop, a community of consumers of their product and journalists. The book was nominated for the award of A.K. The Trinity “Steppe Wolf” 2014, in the next issue of regular column, Julia Strakovich talks with the frontman of the “Megapolis” and the general producer of the Snegiri label Oleg Nesterov about how the musicians earn money in a new digital economy.
On September 24 and 25, Megapolis represents in the center to them. Meyerhold the musical performance “From the life of the planets”, for which they collect money using crowdfunding .
Julia Strakovich: Oleg, today we are going to talk on a delicate topic - about money. Of course, it would not be discussed with you - the Megapolis is now an incredibly interesting creative period. But, on the other hand, the position “We are interested in your work, and even how you exist financially - not our business”, just very characteristic of the current public, seems to me hypocritical and consumer. In fact, I think that an open conversation about the financial side of the musician’s life at this stage is very important. After all, see what is happening: there was a digital revolution, the traditional musical economy collapsed, and then everything hung in the air and it hangs. It seems to be striming, social networks, various services - a lot of new opportunities, but how all this works and what the musicians live at the same time, no one knows exactly: there are solid legends and speculations around. In the West there are at least some voices of people who are ready to openly talk about their finances-we have a complete silence. But our situation is not at all like the Western situation - both modern and especially the same. Let's try to figure it out - on your example. Preferably in order, from the very beginning.
Oleg Nesterov: At first, the whole story with the Megapolis - this, of course, was a pure amateur, we all worked as engineers. The changes occurred somewhere in 1988-it was such a time, Rock left the underground, well, and we at the very least played at some festivals, concerts and began to earn something on this. And since January 1989, we entered the structure of Ars as a young team, began to play on the warm -up of Serov - and then we had stadiums, sports palaces, 12 concerts in Kyiv in 4 days, 5 concerts in Rostov in 3 days, and so on. From my point of view, we then began to receive some superpowabenens-and our soil left under the feet. But it was a short time, for about six months, then the demand for our music began to fall sharply, and we entered a strip of a protracted crisis. The 90th, 91st, 92nd, 93rd years-they were all just terrible, because the country traded from the hands and guys with the guitar already caused nothing but pity.
Strakovich: And how did you survive?
Nesterov: Whoever could. They did not earn music. But then, somewhere since the end of 1993, clubs appeared. And in 1994-1995, clubs and casinos (because they were a casino) began to play a noticeable role in our fate. It is clear that there were concerts in some halls, we were then a popular team in the wave of Karl-Marx-Stadt, but nevertheless we lived mainly from clubs. I can’t say that I was very fat, but somehow existed. In 1996, we recorded a “thunderstorm in the village” and, in general, remained in demand, but I well remember that then I just started thinking: there is a limited clip of clubs in Moscow plus some rare, in fact, touring-and I am too dependent on what is not clear from what. It was such a troubled feeling, I really did not like it.
The song "Superango" fell into "2 days" Duni Smirnova - we received either 50 or 60 thousand rubles.
Strakovich: You say - recorded a "thunderstorm in the village." This is just interesting: how was the case with records in terms of finance at that time?
Nesterov: Everything was in Partisan. The first entry was home - “Morning”, a magneto -album. The second was at the "melody" at the expense of the state. We collected the third album “variegated wrecks” at the expense of concerts in Ars, but this is 1990 and not God the news of what money; There is the only thing - there was a shortage of studios, not a financial deficit. We also recorded the “female heart” at the expense of the state. Then, at Mosfilm, Tom Hidley built a studio, there was just its commissioning, and we spent a year there for free - as a kind of cats that can be trained. The next album “ Megapolis ” was financed by the German publisher Ulrich Rutzel from Erdenklang , he even came up with a special label under us, we were his first and last artists on this label. He invested in the record, but the phonogram remained with him because of this-which, in general, is fair. The electronic album “Neev” was actually made on the knees, in the Midi-Studio Mosfilm, which was not in business and we could learn to work on computers there. And at the 1996 album, General then gave money Records is Alexander Morozov, Nadia Solovyova and Artemy Troitsky, they had such a company of co -founders. They dumped us some kind of gigantic amount-in my opinion, about 50 thousand dollars or brands, and we went to Germany, chose the top-end studio of Diter Dirk and recorded there for a month, it turned out to be very fat. At the same time, from a commercial point of view, the album itself was, of course, a full guard, because we came out of the shadow of our own success, we did not want to be hostages of Karl-Marx-Stadt. This phonogram remained with Morozov, and only now we seemed to have agreed that we return it through different exchange. Then there was a 14-year break. At the time of Superango, we already had our own studio, but to recoup the rent, it worked in commercial mode, and we could only be written at night and one of the weekends. But it was free, we paid only one session musician for mix and mastering - it was about five thousand euros. Actually, we did not have this money, the Soyuz company gave them to us, having received the rights to the publication.
Strakovich: I see, this is expenses. What about income?
Nesterov: It is clear that we received nothing from the magneto -album and “melodies” at all, not a penny. We received from BSA from BSA from the "variegated breeze" and "female heart" Records , which issued them, some amount that I-I remember for sure-was enough for 12 bottles of vodka and 6 cans of black caviar, because we went to Germany and we needed to exchange it there later. We did not receive anything for Megapolis , because he failed in Germany, and here he was very quickly taken to the hands of the pirates-I can imagine how much they earned on Muscovites and Karl -Marx-Stadt, it was a super-Russian album, but neither we, nor the company that reprinted it here, did not earn anything. This, of course, applies to the "thunderstorms in the village." As for the "superango", then nothing here. We sold several thousand copies, but consider: to return even 5,000 euros, how much we need to sell ...
Strakovich: That is, so far in the parish is solid zeros ...
Nesterov: The only thing from the records brought money is the sales of phonograms in some films, but this is a rarity, exceptions. Here the song “Superango” fell into “2 days” Duni Smirnova - we received either 50 or 60 thousand rubles.
Strakovich: Well, “from the life of planets” - a project made entirely in new times?
Nesterov: This is generally a special story - a three -year cycle, all this undertaking with a castle , because we had to pay for an expedition there to sign up, and, of course, for a mix, craftswall. Despite the fact that our studio and the main work we did here, about 600 thousand rubles we invested only in production. And also nothing from sales, of course, is not expected.
Strakovich: I want to clarify - today there is a lot of distribution channels. And physical sales, and digital, and streaming like the same “Yandex.Music” - everywhere “from the life of planets” is available. And from everywhere - nothing?
Nesterov: Well, we don’t have accurate sales data now-we are trading through Nikitin on iTunes , he has not yet sent a report, although there we seemed to reach 3rd place in the first week. C D and vinyl, feels good, go well, but still have not even repaid production. It is quite obvious that any significant amounts here will not be in any case. So we are counting exclusively on concerts.
Strakovich: It turns out that the digital revolution, that the digital revolution is not for you by and large nothing has changed? All this Western drama with the collapse of the record market - is it not about us at all?
Nesterov: Here we are talking now, I look, and it turns out that yes - nothing has changed. As we have never received anything with the records, everyone is used to living, without counting on them.
Strakovich: Let's then deal with concerts to complete the picture. What happens in this area, what changes?
Nesterov: Not very large. The share of clubs has now become smaller. Personally, we have ceased to take shape with “16 tons” because of our originality-we are not the Spleen group, not the Bi-2 group, it’s difficult to believe in us. At the same time, there is “B2” where we like to play, and we no longer really want to discover any other site in Moscow for ourselves. A significant segment now is festivals of various kinds, but there are many festivals when you have a fresh product. And so-reserves, an event. In general, three or four concerts per month are obtained.
Strakovich: And many of them are reserves?
Nesterov: A little, somewhere, maybe every fifth. After all, this should be a kind of view of the world in order to invite the “megapolis” to play at home. For the party, our music is specific, but the group is not particularly called for the funeral. By the way, in vain, “Superango”, in my opinion, is excellent music for memorial service, bright and configured for infinity.
Strakovich: do you agree to all proposals or is there any selectivity?
Nesterov: But for some prohibitive things we are not invited. Yes, we played at weddings - and these were wonderful weddings. They did not play at the funeral, but, for example, there was an event of insurers called “there is nowhere to hurry” - with a demonstration of harm from a rush in an accident, and now they called us. There is nowhere to hurry (laughs) ... No, there is no selectivity, because they don’t invite us to the saunas and do not require dancing on the tables.
Strakovich: Are ordinary concerts always pay off?
Nesterov: This is a question for promoters, we play for the fee, not for the cashier. The exception is only a musical performance that was in the Gogol Center and will be in the Meyerhold center on September 24-25 . We ourselves made it at our own peril and risk, and we roll it ourselves. There is only a cash desk, but in Gogol, thank God, everything turned out - and we, minus, the theater received 176 thousand rubles. But “from the life of the planets”, although the music there for three quarters is instrumental, in general, oddly enough, turned out to be a project that is more understandable to the public, they react to it very well, and it’s easier for us.
Group "Megapolis". Concert performance "From the life of planets"
Strakovich: I see, this is how the financial situation looks in general. And what about the exit? All musicians of the Megapolis today live exclusively at the expense of the group's income? Or not?
Nesterov: Let's just say - they all live at the expense of music. Not only the "megalopolis". Someone concerts with other teams, someone works as a session musician, someone writes music for cinema, someone is engaged in our studio, but I still give lectures, conduct programs on TV, work in Snegirs.
Strakovich: But is it just such a hobby or still a financial necessity? Without all these side projects, is one “megapolis” is able to feed?
Nesterov: It depends on who has some kind of life requirements. Someone, of course, would have lived with this money calmly. Here's the point. In what I mentioned at the beginning of the conversation-in the sensation that I had since the beginning of 1996. When you are financially dependent on some kind of concert pool that you need to play, you become completely not free as an artist and as a person-you give your talent hostage. You have a need to stay afloat all the time - and this is actually Yarmo, a real bondage. You need to constantly think about something: how to make you have been rotated, shoot some clips. I don’t know, maybe when Boris Grebenshchikov records an album or Leps there, they no longer need it, but for an average artist with average income, this is so. And if you live only at the expense of the group, you inevitably begin to be afraid and narrow the creative nozzle. Therefore, when producing first appeared in my life, then teaching, I finally sighed freely. I began to treat the songs as a peasant with my children: someone will be overwhelmed, someone will take someone, as it will be, it will be. In fact, this gives strength, gives confidence and other meaning, because there is an opportunity to act without looking back. I felt freedom as an artist, as a musician at the moment when I unleashed my projects with the need for financial success. It was before the “superango”, and it seems to me that the caliber of the resulting depended on the fact that I was not afraid that I did not calculate the radiosingla and everything else, it was just important for me to do what I wanted as it should. And only then - to see what will come of it, how they will react to it. If we calculated the “superango” from the very beginning or, God forbid, they began to calculate the project “from the life of planets” on the Excel tables, thinking whether we would live on tomorrow, then, of course, we would never have started it. And I believe that, in principle, the view of the artist, a real artist is the primacy of the idea, and how it will exist there, what he needs to-sleep on a bench or look for some other earnings-this is a personal business of everyone.
Strakovich: And personally you have chosen other earnings.
Nesterov: Well, in fact, not just earnings. Yes, I have the main thing now - “from the life of the planets”, but also producing and teaching - this is also mine, what I do with great interest. There has never been such a thing that I have nothing to live on and I agree to any work. At first, there is always an interest, because of him I take it for something, and only then it turns out that this is a source of income that somehow untie my hands. It was just the same with my television program: I got involved out of curiosity, I really like to talk, I am interested in people, especially people who have become legends in music - and here I can ask them any questions for an hour and a half, it is important for me from a human point of view. You understand how I live ... I just do things that are important to me, and money falls on me from somewhere.
Strakovich: A good business strategy.
Nesterov: So it is with music. The ideas that excite you are primary. And in fact, the stronger you are captured by the idea, the brighter the plan, the more it takes up place in your heart, the more likely you will begin to act some related proposals. Well, as the people say: God gave the baby, and God gave the money to which He will grow. This is always the case. The more you are fascinated by the idea, the more you have the chance that you will drip from somewhere exactly as much as you need. On an entry in the castle, on something else. I say this from my own experience. You can’t even imagine what problems we had with “from the life of the planets” when I realized that no one would give money. Well, scrape for production, but sorry - everything else? A very difficult moment was a very difficult proposal: to play the reserve “From the Life of the Planet” 10 days before the official premiere in the cinema of the Metropol Hotel for a very chosen audience. It was an event of the event, it cost it incredibly expensive, but this money was just needed to complete the work on the site . We really needed them - so they came. I'm just not surprised for a second. So everything works.
For the party, our music is specific, but the group is not particularly called for the funeral. By the way, in vain.
Strakovich: Here, by the way, about how everything works. Not so long ago it seemed that in many ways the power of the digital revolution was a gift in the born economy. Behind her stood an encouraging and very correct idea: an extremely dubious musical business, all this purchase and sale, fades away, and direct financial support for the public comes in its place, the time of conscious and honest mutual responsibility of the audience and artist begins. But we will take your story: in the community of the “megalopolis” on Facebook, three thousand subscribers, you yourself have under 100 thousand subscribers. Everywhere you announced the crowdfunding campaign "from the life of planets." And what? On "circles" - 206 participating. As a result, the event and a very chosen audience again become the way out. What happens: all this direct support of the audience is actually a myth?
Nesterov: Not quite so. We had a couple of large contributions, one, for example, 100 thousand rubles. But yes, only the site cost 760 thousand at the same time. As for specifically “circles” and crowdfunding, the first reason that we did not gain the requested amount - we started, not explaining what we are doing, what kind of project it is, what it is good. We just said: it will be cool - throw yourself. Someone believed, someone is not.
Strakovich: How else? The new work of any artist is always, in general, a cat in a bag.
Nesterov: The whole point is that there is a karma of the ensemble, and the karma of our ensemble - it is so ... bushy, so to speak.
It sounds good.
Agree.
