President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko called on the United States to provide Ukraine with a special status outside the NATO military bloc. He stated this, speaking to the US Congress, UNIAN reports . His performance in English was repeatedly interrupted by stormy applause.
“I consider it my duty to restore the Ukrainian army and make it strong and modern, which can be proud of. Understanding this, I urge the United States to give Ukraine a special status that would reflect the highest level of interaction with NATO member,” the Ukrainian president said.
Poroshenko explained that the goal of Ukraine is not to win the war, but to preserve the world. “To preserve the world, we must be strong enough,” he said. “We have no doubt that we will be strong thanks to you.”
In addition, Poroshenko asked for the creation of a special fund to promote the reform of the economy and the field of justice of Ukraine, as well as the support of investment of American companies in the Ukrainian economy. In addition, he urged the United States to continue the application of economic sanctions against the aggressor - Russia.
Poroshenko emphasized that Ukraine "at any price and under any conditions will not accept the loss of Crimea." He called the return of the peninsula "not only a prerequisite for normalizing relations between Russia and Ukraine," but also "an integral condition for the Crimeans." The President noted that the issue of the return of Crimea will be decided "for many years", but exclusively peacefully.
In July, it was reported that the US Congress considers the bill to give Ukraine, Moldova and Georgia the status of the main allies of Washington outside the NATO bloc. The document has already been adopted in two readings, after which it has been transferred to the relevant commission for refinement to the third, final reading. The appointment of the law is to prevent Russian aggression against these countries.
In addition, the document prohibits the executive authorities of the United States to perform any actions that could be interpreted as the recognition or approval of the Russian annexation of Crimea. The State Department is prescribed to strengthen the work on the development of democratic institutions, independent media, political and public organizations in the countries of the former USSR, as well as increase the scale of educational and cultural exchange with these countries.
The concept of the main Nedenatovsky ally appeared in the United States in 1989, under President George Boucher Sr. This status does not imply Washington of assistance in the case of military conflicts, but gives a number of military and financial advantages that other countries that are not part of NATO are not provided. Today, 15 countries have the status of the Main Izenatovsk United States, including Australia, Egypt, Israel, Kuwait, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Korea, Japan.
