Sales of Google Chromecast began in Russia

On September 26, simultaneously with the start of sales of the iPhone 6, Chromecast officially came to Russia - a device from Google that allows you to watch content from computers, smartphones and tablets on TVs with an HDMI input. TJournal attended the presentation of the device at Google's Russian office.

Sales of Chromecast began in Russia in Beeline, Euroset, MVideo, MegaFon and Eldorado stores. You can buy the device for 2,290 rubles, and by the end of 2014, buyers will receive the film “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” on Google Play as a gift.

Chromecast is a small dongle that connects to the HDMI port of your TV. Setting it up is similar to setting up a router: by connecting Chromecast to a Wi-Fi network, it can be used on all devices on the same network.

Chromecast is compatible with Android and iOS phones and tablets, as well as computers running Mac OS, Windows, or the Chrome operating system. The external device is used as a control panel: you can start playing video or music from it, and you can share a live video broadcast of the screen content from your computer.

The main cases for which Chromecast is intended are watching YouTube together or listening to music on Google Play. When using the YouTube application, users can create a playlist of songs or video clips without disturbing each other, or, conversely, interrupt the broadcast at will.

According to Google representatives, the ability of any user from the same Wi-Fi network to interrupt someone else's broadcast is not a security omission in the device itself. Only those who are connected to the desired Wi-Fi network can access it, and in this case the issue relates more to ensuring the security of the network than the device itself, according to Google.

Although Google representatives claim more than 6 thousand developers integrating about 10 thousand applications with Chromecast, most of them are either unpopular or not supported in Russia - for example, Spotify or Beats Music. However, on Android you can cast the contents of your entire screen to your TV, including games.

For Chromecast to work, it must be connected to an additional power source: the device comes with a USB cord that can be plugged into a TV or an outlet. In the latter case, you can turn on the TV remotely via Chromecast, if it supports such a function.

Chromecast came out in July 2013 and retailed for $35 in the US. Google representatives explained that the Russian price, almost twice the American price, is mainly formed due to increased taxes on sales income. The device itself has not changed since then, but its software has received several updates.
