The comedy of Zhora Kryzhovnikov also claimed the nomination, but the majority of the votes of the Russian Oscar Committee received the film Zvyagintsev, ITAR-TASS reports.
“Leviathan” is an author’s interpretation of the history of the biblical Job, told on the material of modern Russia. Aleksey Serebryakov, Elena Lyadova, Vladimir Vdovichenkov, Roman Madyanov, Anna Ukolova and others starred in the film.
The world premiere of Leviathan took place at the 67th Cannes International Film Festival, where the picture was awarded a prize for the best script. In North America, the film was first shown on September 10 at the Toronto Film Festival.
In the North American rental, Sony Classics will release Leviathan in December 2014. In Russia, it was previously demonstrated within a week to comply with formal procedures and qualify for nomination from Russia to Oscar. The film will be released in a wide Russian rental on November 13, and there will be no obscene battle, which sounded in the original version of the film and almost cost it a rolling certificate intended for showing in cinemas.
Members of the Russian Oscar Committee receive the initial list of almost 60 Russian films, released from October 2013 to September 2014. The final list includes 10 paintings, of which experts choose only one, which enters the Long List of the Oscar. The final list of nominees, as a rule, is announced in the United States at the beginning of the year, the award ceremony is held at the end of February.
