"Garage" will present an exhibition about the history of the performance in Russia

On October 17, the Museum of Contemporary Art “Garage” will open the exhibition “Performance in Russia: Cartography of History” - the first major study of the centenary history of the performance in our country, from early futuristic experiments to radical actions of our time.

The exhibition will show specially created reconstruction of historically important works. The artist Stas Shurip will present his animated version of the futuristic opera of Mikhail Matyushin, Alexei Kruchenykh and Casimir Malevich “Victory over the Sun” (1913).

Visitors will be able to see the reconstruction of the famous scenographic attitude of Lyubov Popova for the performance “Great -Located Cornflower”, as well as Barbara Stepanova’s sketches from the play “Death of Talerykin” (1922).

As a separate event, the famous composer Sergei Khismatov will present his interpretation of Arseny Avraamov’s “Symphony Gudkov” (1922), consisting of a confluence of cannon and pistol shots, factory boots, a pair of aircraft, the noise of aircraft and other “machine” sounds of the city.

Also, as part of the exhibition in the Garage Educational Center, the video program “Contemplation of the Time” will be shown.

The exhibition "Performance in Russia: Cartography of History" has been prepared by specialists of the Garage Museum since 2011. A special platform has been launched on the museum’s website- a free information resource with photo and video materials dedicated to the study of this genre in domestic art.

In addition to the multimedia application, a catalog will be released to the exhibition, which includes the introductory texts of the curators for the project as a whole and to 12 thematic routes, as well as a complete list of all the works that have included in the exposition. About 200 performance presented at the exhibition will be equipped with technical descriptions, illustrative materials, as well as comments by authors, spectators and art historians.

The exhibition "Performance in Russia: Cartography of History" will last until December 5.
