In Ukraine, conditions have been created for a trial in absentia of Yanukovych

President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko has signed a law allowing trial in absentia of persons who are on the international wanted list and confiscate their property. Thus, in Ukraine they will be able to judge the former president of the country Viktor Yanukovych.

“From tomorrow, our prosecutor’s office, investigating authorities, courts will have the opportunity at an open meeting to put in the dock and bring to justice those who robbed our people, to take <.> steps regarding their property, if it was acquired in a dishonest way,” Peter Poroshenko.

• The Verkhovna Rada voted for the law on October 7 on the fourth attempt. He was supported by 253 deputies with the necessary 226.
• Viktor Yanukovych is on trial for the murder of civilians during clashes in Kyiv. The former president is also a defendant in the case of calls for the overthrow of the constitutional order. The Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine put him on the wanted list.
• Yanukovych left Ukraine at the end of February 2014, after armed clashes between the opposition and security forces in the center of Kyiv. The deposed president fled to Russia, where he gave two press conferences during which he refused to recognize the legitimacy of the new Ukrainian authorities.
