
Specialists of the Japanese company Hitachi, together with a group of researchers from the University of Kyoto, created the technology of recording data in quartz glass, which allows you to store information for 300 million years.
According to 3Dnews , a quartz glass disk, conditionally divided into 100 layers with a step of 60 μm, is used to record - 50 layers per side. The capacity of such a disk is comparable to the capacity of the modern Blu-Ray disk.
The optics of the recording laser itself focuses on a given layer. The pulse laser with a flash of a billionth of the microseconds creates a stain in the body of quartz, which is then read by an optical system in reading mode.
For the functioning of this system, the engineers needed to solve two problems: first, using compensating lenses, the developers eliminated the effect of spherical aberration, when the recording laser projected deep into the quartz, and not a point, and then learned to outline the interference from reflections from neighboring layers.
Quartz glass optical disk successfully tolerates various extreme loads. It withstands heating up to 1000 degrees Celsius and is not afraid of moisture, reliably preserving the recorded data.
