Yandex analysts released a study of the Russian media sphere based on data from the Yandex.News service, finding out how the approach to the work of journalists of online publications in Russia has changed. The full version of the study is published on the company’s corporate blog .
According to Yandex, in recent years the share of reprints in Russian online media has noticeably decreased. If in 2010 it was 25 percent, then in 2014 the share of copied materials decreased to 16 percent. Only the media of the Far East stand out: for them this figure still reaches 26 percent.
The most original content appeared on TV channels and radio, and the least on news agencies, although they are the main providers of information in the media environment. Yandex suggested that the high proportion of reprints among agencies is due to the fact that they often broadcast information from official sources.
The most cited media outlets were the country's three main news agencies: TASS (formerly ITAR-TASS), Interfax and RIA Novosti. Among the specialized publications, the leaders were Sport Express, Forbes and R-Sport.
According to data from the website statistics service Yandex.Metrica, on average, one out of four Russian users visits media sites once a month. Regular news readers make up only 4 percent of the total RuNet audience: they watch 30 news items per month or more. Half of them read only one source, a quarter read on two or three sites.
In addition, Yandex analyzed the intersection of the audience of Russian media and, based on this data, divided them into 12 groups: agencies, entertainment and urban media, news publications, women's sites, automotive projects, sports and others.
As it turned out thanks to Yandex.Metrica, the largest share of purchase (advertising) traffic was from publications writing about real estate - 15 percent. For business newspapers or popular publications, this share averages 1 percent. For city publications (The Village, Afisha and others), the most significant source of traffic turned out to be social networks: they bring 17 percent of clicks to these media, with 59 percent coming from Facebook.
