Rostov journalist and publisher Alexander Tolmachev was sentenced to nine years in a maximum security colony in the extortion case. According to the Caucasian Knot , the court of the village of Kushchevskaya, Krasnodar Territory, found Tolmachev guilty of all four episodes. The journalist did not admit his guilt. The court sentenced him the sentence of the punishment, which the prosecutor demanded.

Tolmachev has been in custody since December 2011. According to investigators, he demanded 8.5 million rubles from the entrepreneurs of Novocherkassk in exchange for a promise not to publish revealing materials about them. The journalist was charged with article 163, part 3, paragraph "B" of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (extortion on an especially large scale).

According to the defense, the initiator of the persecution of the journalist was the chairman of the Rostov Regional Court Viktor Tkachev, about whom Tolmachev published critical materials. For one of these articles, the journalist was fined 120 thousand rubles in a claim for slander in 2011.

In May, the case of Tolmachev began to consider the city court of Novocherkassk. Protection, referring to the conflict of the accused with Judge Tkachev, petitioned the transfer of the trial to another region. The court granted this petition, and the case was listened to in Kushchevskaya.

Tolmachev published the newspaper "authorized to declare" and the magazine "About Rostov." He was also the editor -in -chief of the "Novocherkassky Vedomosti".

Last year, the Rostov branch of the RPR-Parnas nominated Tolmachev as a candidate for deputies of the regional legislative assembly.
