The first and only president of the USSR Mikhail Gorbachev, on the eve of the visit to Germany, said that at the New Politics forum in Berlin and during a meeting with the Chancellor of Germany Angel Merkel, he would firmly take the position of protecting Russia and its President Vladimir Putin, "Interfax reports.
“Of course, I use the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the destruction of the Berlin wall so that there are never any walls , not only stone, but also moral and universal people. As the wise cat said in one of the children's fairy tales,“ you need to live together, ”Gorbachev told Interfax on Thursday, November 6.
He also emphasized the role of the United States with the situation around Russia.
“The same topic,” he continued, “I will raise in an interview with an angel Merkel. In my firm conviction, the problem of Ukraine is just a reason for the United States. Russia went on a new relationship, created new structures of cooperation. And everything would be fine, but not everyone in the United States liked it. They have other plans, they need a different situation, so that they can get along. It is important that they got into, ”the politician emphasized.
At the same time, Gorbachev noted Putin's importance for Russia - no one protects the interests of the country as its president. In turn, Gorbachev himself is ready to protect both Russia and its leader.
“I am on the forum and in conversations with the leaders and public figures to take the position of protecting Russia, and therefore the protection of its President Vladimir Putin. I am absolutely convinced that Putin is best defending the interests of Russia now. Of course, in his politics there is enough, as they say, for which you can catch on criticism for it. But I won’t be closed for it, and I will not want others to cling.
Gorbachev also expressed the hope that in Germany he would be able to agree with his interlocutors and come to some general opinion. “Still, they, although former leaders, but very influential people, and their opinion is far from indifferent to both the leaders of their countries and the public as a whole,” he emphasized.
Recall, on November 9, in Germany, the 25th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall will be celebrated.
