Democrats of the majority in Congress creates serious problems for the US President
As a result of this week in the US, the Republican Party gained control over both chambers of Congress. This changes the entire political situation in Washington and creates huge difficulties for US President Barack Obama in the last two years of his stay in the White House.
On Wednesday, at a press conference in the White House, President Barack Obama recognized his own responsibility for the defeat of the Democratic Party, congratulated the Republicans on the victory and said that he was ready to listen to the elections to the election: voters said:
I personally, as the president, have a unique responsibility to ensure that Washington function effectively
- It is quite obvious that the Republicans have achieved great success, and they deserve praise for successfully conducted election campaigns. I will give you (journalists and professional analysts) the opportunity to understand the results of the elections themselves, but for me it is important for me: American voters sent us politicians. They want us to do our work, and this applies to both the Democrats and the Republicans. But I personally, as the president, have a unique responsibility to ensure that Washington function effectively. To everyone who took part in the elections, I want to say: I heard you, ”said Barack Obama.
The vast majority of observers associate the defeat of democrats with a low level of popularity of President Obama. According to recent surveys, only 44 percent of citizens approve of his activities as president. The candidates of the Democratic Party, whom voters associated with the president, lost even in those states and electoral districts that were always considered a stronghold of this party. Moreover, this applies not only to the elections to the Congress, but also to the elections of governors, which on Tuesday went to 36 out of 50 states.
The fact that the Republicans receive control over both chambers of Congress means that it will be extremely difficult for the president to conduct his initiatives
The results of the Governor’s elections in Maryland, where the candidate of the Democratic Party lost, was indicative in this regard, despite the fact that President Obama himself and the first Lady of the United States and former democrat President Bill Clinton actively campaigned for him. As the observer of the popular online publication Real Clear Politics, Sean Trende, should be considered as his referendum on the activities of President Obama, and at this referendum the president received an unequivocal vote of distrust.
The president himself, of course, draws attention not to political failures, but to the achievements of his administration in the field of economics and social protection of citizens:
- Since the economic crisis six years ago, our country has reached significant progress. The level of unemployment has decreased, a larger number of citizens have medical insurance, more goods are produced in the USA, the deficiency of our budget has decreased, our dependence on imported oil has decreased, and our economy is growing faster than anywhere in the world, ”says the US President.
I judge ideas not by who they are nominated: democrats or republicans, but by the fact they benefit the Americans or not
From a purely practical point of view, the fact of the Republicans obtaining control over both chambers of Congress means that it will be extremely difficult for the president to conduct his initiatives. Indeed, to approve this or that bill, it is necessary that it be approved by both the House of Representatives and the Senate. Until now, the balance of power has been such that the president could always count on the support of the democratic majority in the Senate. Now he does not have such support, and at his disposal only one way to block the initiative of the Republicans, namely, resort to veto right.
The President claims that he is ready to cooperate with the Republicans in the context of a new alignment of forces, but will be firmly standing in his positions:
- I judge ideas not by who they are nominated: democrats or republicans, but by the fact they benefit the Americans or not. This does not mean that there will be no disagreement between me and Congress on those issues that are important to us. The Congress will probably adopt bills that I refuse to sign, and I am sure that some of my decisions will not like congressmen. But it should be so, because this is how democratic systems work.
In turn, the leading Republicans also believe that constructive cooperation between the Congress of the new composition and the administration of President Obama is possible, but for this the president will have to make concessions. Here is what one of the main political opponents of President Obama, a senator from Kentukka, Mitch Makkonl , who will now become the leader of the republican majority in the Senate:
If one party controls the legislative branch of power, and the other is executive, this does not mean that we can not achieve anything
-Most of the newly elected Republican senators do not believe that voters sent them to Washington in order to fight with the president and democrats. I have repeatedly said that if one party controls the legislative branch of power, and the other is executive, this does not mean that we can not achieve anything. There are a lot of examples when in such situations it was possible to achieve a lot, and the Republicans are ready to work. But I want to emphasize that in our system of management of the country the main figure is still the president. He is endowed with the relevant authority of the US Constitution. Unfortunately, in the last six years he had to deal with the Senate controlled by the Democratic Party, who did not show great activity and, defending the president, refused to make decisions that were objectionable to him. Now the president will have to deal with a more difficult arrangement.
Mikkonl recalled that in the late nineties, another Democrat President, Bill Clinton, had to face a similar situation with a similar situation. Clinton then showed political skills and adjusted his course. Mitch McConsel expressed the hope that President Obama would act in the same way.
