1989 - "velvet revolution"

On November 17, the Czech Republic and Slovakia celebrate 25 years since the beginning of the "velvet revolution." 8 days after the fall of the Berlin wall in Prague, a student anti -government demonstration was brutally dispersed. The next day, students occupied university premises, they were supported by actors of Prague theaters who declared a strike. Over the next days, hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets. By the end of the month, the communist leadership agreed to hold free elections. In December, dissident Vaclav Gavel was elected President of Czechoslovakia. Democracy in the country was restored.
