FIFA report on the results of the investigation of the case of corruption
The FIFA Ethics Commission reported on the results of the investigation of the circumstances under which the hostesses of the 2018 and 2022 world championships were chosen.
The case was conducted by the head of the Investigative Chamber of the Committee, former American prosecutor Michael Garcia. According to the results of the work that took a year and a half and cost more than $ 9 million, he prepared a 430-page report. FIFA refused to publish it completely, referring to the confidentiality of the information contained in it. The head of the Arbitration Chamber of the Ethics Committee Hans-Joachim Eckert presented only a brief report on 42 pages.
The report states that the first suspicions in the bribery of sports officials appeared even before in December 2010 the FIFA Executive Committee held a vote, as a result of which Russia and Qatar went the right to hold the world championships. During the investigation, these suspicions were not backed up by evidence sufficient to raise the question of revising the voting results.
The report notes that Qatar completely collaborated with the investigation, handed over the necessary materials and allowed the witnesses to interview. Russia also provided the opportunity to talk with several witnesses, but conveyed only a “limited number of documents”.
As stated in the report, there is no sufficient evidence that the Russia-2018 announcement committee tried to illegally enter the elections of the hostess of the 2018 World Cup, using relations with members of the FIFA Executive Committee (English).
