Ex-deputy of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg Yuri Shutov died in a colony for life prisoners

Former deputy of the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg and former assistant to Mayor Anatoly Sobchak, Yuri Shutov, died in the White Swan colony for those sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1999, Shutov was accused of involvement in the murder of Vice-Governor Mikhail Manevich, but the court considered the charges unproven and released him, after which Shutov was captured by a SOBR detachment right in the hall of the Kalininsky District Court. While under arrest in the Kresty pre-trial detention center, Shutov participated and won the elections to the Legislative Assembly of St. Petersburg. The investigation into his criminal case lasted 2.5 years, and the trial lasted another 4.5 years. Over the years, the defendant made at least eight suicide attempts. In 2006, Shutov was sentenced to life imprisonment for organizing murders for hire and kidnappings as part of an organized criminal group. The ex-deputy did not admit the charges brought against him.
