Ministry of Health proposes compulsory treatment for alcoholism of those responsible for drunken accidents

The Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation proposes to introduce compulsory treatment for alcoholism or mandatory preventive measures for people who have committed road accidents and other administrative offenses while intoxicated.

As Assistant Minister of Health of the Russian Federation Tatyana Klimenko told RIA Novosti, the department proposes to expand the use of such measures: since May 2014, compulsory treatment has been provided for persons who have violated the law while intoxicated. For those who are sick with alcoholism, it is proposed to introduce compulsory treatment, for those who have not yet been found to be addicted - mandatory prevention. Klimenko said that the Ministry of Health will hold hearings in the Public Chamber in April 2015 on this initiative. According to member of the Public Chamber Sultan Khamzaev, from January to November 2014, 14.3 thousand accidents occurred in Russia due to the fault of drunk drivers.
