Seasonal flooding in eastern Malaysia in photographs
Another seasonal flood in Malaysia caused more than four thousand people to flee their homes, about a hundred tourists were blocked at a resort in the east of the country, and Instagram accounts of local residents and tourists were filled with photographs in the water.
Floods in Malaysia usually begin in November and often cover the entire peninsular part of the state. The seasonality of the phenomenon also affects photographs published on social networks: most of the participants in the photographs seem relaxed and calm, and most often smile while standing in muddy water.
At the time of publication of this material, the main news story of the 2014 flood remains the situation surrounding visitors to the Mutiara Taman Negara Resort, who were blocked in the hotel due to the greatly increased water level in the nearby river. Among them there are not only Malaysian citizens, but also foreigners: Canadians, Germans and French. The authorities began discussing options for rescuing the tourists, and also prepared to drop food from a helicopter if necessary.
TJ collected photographs from the site of the flooded hotel, as well as from its surroundings and from other flood-affected states.
