1999. The resignation of President Yeltsin

15 years ago, on December 31, 1999, Boris Yeltsin resigned from the post of president of Russia, appointing the acting President of Prime Minister Vladimir Putin.

Yeltsin said: "I made a decision. I thought about it for a long time and painfully. Today, on the last day of the outgoing century, I am resigned."

On the same day, Putin signed a decree guaranteeing Yeltsin protection against judicial persecution, as well as material support to him and his family.
