The UN Security Council did not adopt a draft resolution on the establishment of a Palestinian state and the conclusion of a peace agreement between Israel and Palestine.
According to the UN News Center, only eight countries supported the draft resolution - Russia, China, France, Luxembourg, Argentina, Chile, Chad and Jordan. Australia and Luxembourg opposed. The United Kingdom, South Korea, Lithuania, Nigeria and Rwanda abstained.
US Permanent Representative Samantha Paeur stressed that the text of the document refers to the problems of only one side - the resolution does not take into account the interests of Israel.
For the adoption of the resolution, it is necessary that five permanent members of the UN (Russia, the USA, China, France and Great Britain) vote in favor. The United States used the right of veto, which automatically means that the document cannot be adopted. For the document to be adopted, nine countries, including permanent members, must vote for it.
The draft resolution, which was sent to the UN on December 18, provides for the settlement of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict within a year and the withdrawal of Israeli troops from the territory of Palestine by 2017.
